Students not purchasing course materials

Schreiner University prides itself on serving a diverse population of students in a personalized manner. Working with their students on everything from obtaining financial aid to offering career services and free tutoring, the university quickly identified a major problem students were facing: not buying required materials because of the expense which left them unprepared for class.

"Students are, to an alarming degree, beginning to think of textbooks as optional," Bill Muse, vice president of administration and finance at Schreiner University, said. "It was having an impact on student learning. We wanted to provide a solution where all students had all of the required materials on the first day of class."

Looking for a solution

Schreiner University set out to find an answer that would guarantee every student had what they needed when the semester started without incurring unexpected expenses. Adopting a business model where the course materials cost was included with the tuition made the most sense. The university would maintain control of course materials selection, cost and formats, while the students would have their required materials and be able to focus on learning without additional financial stress.

When Schreiner University's original course materials supplier closed its doors, leaving them without materials for the next semester, the administration had to take swift action.
