Case Study: Palo Verde College

To help bolster its commitment to quality distance education, Palo Verde College is providing a stronger course materials service to its off-campus students this upcoming term.

Palo Verde Distance Learning Students to get More Reliable Textbook Service

Finding a new solution

The college has partnered with MBS Direct, the nation's leader in online textbook and course materials fulfillment, to provide the physical and digital books students need at its Needles campus and in other programs.

After using a different service to provide course materials for its distance learning students, the college made the switch to MBS Direct for its price options and its reliability.

"We were having some issues with students ordering the correct book but receiving the wrong book, and in the meantime of sending it back being charged a restocking fee and waiting, so instructors and students were disappointed," said Esther McBroom, Palo Verde's instructional services secretary. "This is going to be a lot easier for the students."

Bridging the distance gap

Whether they live 100 miles away in Needles or serving in the California Department of Corrections, students in the distance and inmate programs at Palo Verde can not easily visit the main campus' bookstore to order their course materials.

With MBS Direct's 99.9% order accuracy and 24-hour shipping on in-stock titles, Palo Verde can make sure the right books get in all of its students' hands at the right time. And with a 24-7 bilingual customer service center, Palo Verde students will have questions about their orders answered promptly so their studies are uninterrupted.

A variety of affordable options

McBroom also noted MBS was selected for its affordability, offering students marketplace rates, used and rental opportunities and a Guaranteed Buyback price so students can know what they'll get back for the book at the end of the term.

"We're really happy with the alternate options for payment, like using Paypal™ as an option. Students really requested that," she said. "And having the feature of using Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) funds and financial aid funds for students to apply to an account and pay for textbooks is awesome."

Palo Verde began serving the Needles area in 1998, and completed a renovation of the historic Claypool building into a state-of-the-art learning facility in 2009. The college also started its Inmate Program in the 2000-2001 academic year.
