MBS Direct Textbooks and Course Materials

Introduction

As we strive to serve those who serve education, Barnes & Noble College/BNC K-12 has developed this faculty guide to help educators better understand the process of requesting teacher's editions and ancillary materials. Before participating in this process it is important to realize that many factors affect the quantity of new books purchased from publishers, including enrollment projections, buyback participation, acquisition of new client inventory, and used book availability. Our goal at Barnes & Noble College/BNC K-12 is to keep textbook prices low, while delivering the best in customer service. Maximizing the number of used books available to students is one of the best ways to keep prices low, and while used books save families money, they can also effect the availability of free teacher resources.

How to Submit a Request for a Teacher Edition

1

To determine what faculty materials are available for the chosen course materials, contact your Publisher Representative. Many publishers also have a website that contains information on obtaining faculty resources.

Helpful Tip - The contact information for our top publishers is listed in the back of this handbook. The name and contact information of the Publisher Representative can be found on the publishers' website. Some smaller publishers may not have a local representative, so instead, you should call the publisher's customer service number.

Helpful Tip - How does your Publisher Representative get credit for the books you have adopted? A report is set up online for any publisher that would like to review what books have been purchased on your behalf. Access to the website is given to one contact at the publisher. Sales Representatives requesting information are referred to that person by a BNC Services Representative. These reports are updated by the 10th of each month with the previous month's purchasing information.

2

Publishers generally prefer that your request be on school letterhead or from a school email account. You can find the specific policy for our most popular publishers listed in our Quick Reference Guide. Faculty requests should include: school name, bookstore (Barnes & Noble College/BNC K-12), instructor, course, approximate student enrollment, semester, book title, author, ISBN, and shipping address. Allow 5-7 business days for your request to be processed. If the request is approved, publishers generally ship your materials within 2-3 weeks, given the materials are in-stock.

3

If your request is denied and you feel entitled to the material, you may contact your BNC Services Account Manager for assistance. Your Account Manager will work with our faculty resource team to resubmit your request to the publisher.

4

If you have exhausted all possibilities with the publisher for free materials, our Desk Copy Program offers a discounted desk copy of the student edition book. This program allows for a student edition of the textbook to be shipped to your school from Barnes & Noble College/BNC K-12 at a 15% discount. At the end of the year, the book may be returned for a full refund using a prepaid shipping label provided by BNC Services. To place an order through our Desk Copy Program, you will need to contact the Textbook Coordinator at your school, who will then forward your request to your BNC Services Account Manager.
